Form R/1, revision 12

Name of requester: Tervi
Class of retrieval sought. This is the requester's estimate and is not binding. See note 3.

Description of the item required. Be as exact as you are able. Match is by description. This office cannot search for what you are not able to describe. Continue overleaf if necessary.
My grandmother's people had a word for themselves. I have been trying for four momenta to put it on a residency form and the form will not take it. The office at Brack Reach says it is not a permitted value and gave me my papers back with a notice, which I have pinned to this slip, because the woman at the counter said the notice would tell you where to look better than I could, and she was kind about it, and she was right.
I want to say first that I am not accusing anybody ofI am not saying anybody has made a mistake. I have read the notice twice. The notice says the permitted list was made out of the first enumeration returns, and that you are the office that holds them. So the word is either in the returns or it is not. If it is not, then that is that, and I will write the nearest one and stop, and I will not be back about it.If it is there I would like a copy of the line. Not the sheet and not the page around it. The line. I will pay for the sheet it comes on. My cousin had a title deed copied here two years ago and told me what it cost, and I have brought that and a little over in case it has gone up since.
I should say why, in case it changes which drawer you look in. My grandmother's house was let go last winter and I am registering at a new address, and the register entry is what the water connection is assessed on, so this is not a matter of feeling. I have to write something in field six by the end of the period or I am assessed as unregistered and the assessment is higher, and I can pay that, but I would rather not, and I would rather not for the reason you would expect.
I have ticked class one because I thought I was asking for a word off a list. I do not think that is right now that I have written it down. Put me in whatever class this actually is and I will pay whatever that is.
The word is Möndri. The ö carries two dots. That is the whole of the difference, and I would not have come otherwise.

NOTICE OF NON-ACCEPTANCE
Registrations and Residency, Brack Reach
Form RR/4c, revision 7
Reference: application R-88214
Filed: tick 2, momenta 3, click 21, galaxal 884
Your application for entry in the residency register is returned to you with your papers, all of which are enclosed and none of which is retained. The application is not refused. It is not accepted at the counter, which is a different thing, and the difference is set out below because applicants ask and are entitled to be told.
Field 6 of form RR/1 is the description of persons. Field 6 accepts a value only where that value appears in the Schedule of Permitted Descriptions (Persons), Standing Regulations Office, revision 44.
Value entered at field 6: Möndri
Nearest value appearing on the schedule: Mondri
An application entering a value that appears on the schedule is accepted at the counter, entered the same tick, and generates no correspondence. An application entering any other value cannot be accepted at the counter. This office holds no discretion in the matter. The discretion was exercised once, at compilation, by the office that compiled the schedule, and it was exercised on typography and not on persons.
You may re-present the application at any counter of this office at any time. There is no fee for re-presentation and no limit on the number of times an application may be re-presented. Your place in the register is not affected by the interval, the register being kept by address and not by date of entry.
Amendment of a permitted value is available and the procedure is short. It is carried out by the Standing Regulations Office under note 9 of the schedule, on the application of a body of record, on production of the source authority for the value, and on payment of the compilation fee. This office is not the source authority and does not hold it.
The schedule states its own source authority at note 2. That note, note 9, and the row bearing the nearest value are reproduced overleaf, so that you are not obliged to buy a copy of the schedule in order to read the three parts of it that concern you.
Overleaf:
SCHEDULE OF PERMITTED DESCRIPTIONS (PERSONS)
Standing Regulations Office, revision 44
Value Reach of first record Carried unaltered since Mondri Brack revision 1 Note 2. The values in this schedule were compiled from the enumerators' returns of the First General Enumeration, galaxal 640, held at the General Index, fonds 3, series 12. Diacritical marks are not reproduced. At compilation the printing office held no sort for a marked vowel, and none was cut, the schedule being a single job of work and not a standing one. A value once printed is carried forward at each revision unaltered.
Note 9. A permitted value may be amended on application to this office by a body of record, on production of the source authority for the value, and on payment of the compilation fee. There is no procedure for amendment on the application of a person. There is no procedure for amendment on the initiative of this office.
RESPONSE TO REQUEST

Form GI/22, revision 9
Request 11-0447
Received: tick 9, momenta 3, click 21, galaxal 884. Returned: tick 4, momenta 4, click 21, galaxal 884. The service standard for class II is one momenta. The standard is met.
Class assigned: II, a copy of a held document. The class shown on the slip was I. Class is assigned on what is asked for and not on who is asking, and what is asked for is a copy of a held document. Note 3 of form R/1 applies. No correction has been made to the slip, the slip being a record of what was written on it.
Series 12 of fonds 3 consists of one thousand one hundred and eighty items, 9.4 linear extent, arranged by enumeration district and thereunder by sheet number. The series is sound throughout, excepting water damage along one edge of about a ninth of the sheets, which is recorded at item level wherever it occurs. The items are single sheets, ruled in eight columns, written in the field, in ink that has browned evenly across the series. Copies of items in this series are made by hand. The series is not released to the copying press, the sheets being unsuitable for the plate on condition grounds.
The description given on the slip is sufficient to match. The value, the spelling of the value including the marked vowel, and the enumeration district named on the notice attached to the slip together identify one item and one line. No search was required and no search has been charged.
The item is described at item level as follows. Fonds 3, series 12, item 4471. One sheet, 0.28 by 0.41, ruled in eight columns, written in one hand throughout, sound, with a water line crossing the lower third of the sheet which does not reach the third column. The sheet is the fourth of nine taken in that district and carries the enumerator's running total in the margin, which is not part of the entry requested and has not been copied.
The entry requested stands at the third column, line 19. It is sixteen words. It is copied in full, without emendation and without abridgement, at enclosure B.
This office certifies that the copy at enclosure B is a true copy of the item held. This office does not certify the item, does not certify the value, and does not certify that the value is the value borne by any person living or of record. Certification for evidential use is a class IV service, is charged per sheet plus the certificate, and was not requested.
The item copied is cited as a source authority in the schedule reproduced on the requester's attachment, at note 2. The citation there is a citation of the series and not of the item. This office holds no record of which items in series 12 were consulted at compilation, no such record having been required of the compiler at the time and none having been deposited since.
The schedule is a published schedule. An extract from it is a class I retrieval, produced the same tick, at no charge, to anybody who asks at the counter. The requester holds an extract already. No further extract has been produced.
Authority: the post of Custodian of the General Index. A form of this class is issued without signature.
